The beach attracts many day trippers and families – so watch out for pedestrians and children. Kiting is slowing taking off on this beach as can be seen from the few deltas that were flying and the two kite surfers that were enjoying the waves. Unfortunately, a sidewind was blowing while we were there which limited us in our buggying. However, even with an onshore breeze the run down the beach is still small.

We stayed in Casey’s Caravan and Camping Park (058 41919), located beside the beach. The park is well run, clean and well serviced. Some of the facilities include laundry, games room, crazy golf as well as a campers kitchen. Alternatively you can stay at the adjoining Clonea Strand Hotel with leisure centre and bowling alley. The hotel is small and relatively quiet at night. Dungarvan also has a selection of hotels, B&B’s and hostels to choose from.

Clonea has little to offer in choices of restaurants or pubs with the exception of the take away and the hotel! Dungarvan, however, has a large selection of pubs and restaurants. We recommend Bridie Dee’s for its old world charm yet very lively music session. Also the Anchor Bar overlooking the river is another lively spot.

Close to Clonea Strand, the drive through the Nire Valley is popular as is the coastal drive to Tramore. Alternatively, check out the sights of Waterford city including the Waterford Crystal factory
