During the summer it attracts holiday-makers as well as the sporty types but thankfully it is long enough to cater for everyone. There is also a permitted area for kiter during these months, If unsure speak with beach lifeguards and they will point you in the right direction. It is also accessible to cars. The best wind direction for Benone is North, North East.
On the left hand side of the beach if there is a red flag up, you are not permitted to go any further.

Benone strand is ideal for many sports including surfing, windsurfing and kiting (either on the land or the water). During recent events it was great to see so many kites flying and these certainly grabbed the attention of the onlookers. Thankfully due to its location it is common for a northerly wind to blow which gives the kite buggiers the full run of the beach.
Benone strand is quite isolated and therefore there is little to offer those not participating in the beach based sports with the obvious exception of sun bathing! |
There are two Caravan and Camping parks located at the entrance to the beach which are open all year around.Downhill Hostel which is located by the beach but is 2 miles from Benone strand main entrance. The hostel has all the required facilities and in addition many rooms offer lovely coastal views but be warned there are no corner shops nearby! The hostel offers both dormitory and double / twin rooms and the rates are very reasonable. The owners are very friendly and welcoming.
Other accommodation is available in Coleraine, Limavidy or Castlerock. |
| Choice of pubs, restaurant and nightlife around Benone is very limited but perhaps more is on offer at peak season. For a livelier venue probably best to head to Coleraine or Limavidy but then transport could be a problem.

The main attractions in that area such as the Giants Causeway are located on the other side of Coleraine and could be too far a drive if you are only waiting for the tide to ebb. We didn’t travel around much so maybe there are some vital sights that we missed out on that could be added here by those in the know.
There is also a ferry service between Magilligan and Greencastle in Co.Donegal if you want to travel further west.
